Oil of the Week: Wild Orange

This is the sixth of many “Oil of the Week” posts, where I highlight the benefits, usage, and safety concerns associated with different essential oils. Personally, I use doTERRA Essential Oils for their purity, integrity, and generous business practices. I have had very profound, healing experiences with these oils and use them everyday for me and my family. If you are interested in trying the “Oil of the Week” or have questions about other oils, please contact me or visit my website. I’m here to help.

wild-orange-15ml.jpg

Wild Orange is one of those oils that just makes you feel happy! Uplifting, this citrus oil awakens, energizes, and revitalizes. I use Wild Orange in my water (one drop for about 8 oz more or less) to add flavor and to help with detoxification. Wild Orange makes a great partner in diffuser or roller bottle blends. Some of my favorites are Wild Orange and Vetiver to help ground/focus/ and uplift and Wild Orange and Peppermint to help wake me up in the afternoons.

Wild Orange, like all citrus essential oils, are photosensitive. That means that one might get a sunburn if applied to skin exposed to the sun within 12 hours after applying. However, it is just fine to apply to skin that is covered like the bottoms of your feet or your solar plexus. Emotionally, Wild Orange is considered “The Oil of Abundance”. Use Wild Orange when you are feeling lack, unworthiness, or want to cultivate more abundance overall in your life.

Oil of the Week: Vetiver

This is the fifth of many “Oil of the Week” posts, where I highlight the benefits, usage, and safety concerns associated with different essential oils. vetiver-15ml

Vetiver is an oil that is newer to me, but has quickly become one I use almost every day. It is a grass harvested in Haiti and the oil is from the roots. The story of how doTERRA works with the community of growers and distillers there is one of the reasons I love working for this company and why I 100% support how they do business. It’s the business of caring about people.

Vetiver is a very grounding oil and helps me calm down and soothes my nervous system, especially when blended with lavender. We use it in the diffuser or in a blend on the bottom of the feet with wild orange to help uplift and focus when doing school work or office work. The oil is very thick, so getting it out of the bottle is a meditation in itself. Take 3-5 long, mindful breaths and the first drop will fall.

More from www.doterra.com:

Description

Vetiver, a member of the grass family, is grown for many reasons. Unlike other grasses, the root system of Vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping to prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. Vetiver has a rich, exotic, complex aroma that is used extensively in perfumes. Due to Vetiver’s calming, grounding effect on the emotions, it is an ideal oil to use in massage therapy. It can also be rubbed on the feet before bedtime to promote a restful night’s sleep. When taken internally, Vetiver can support a heathy immune system.*

Uses

  • Add 1–2 drops to tea or hot drinks during winter time to promote immune-supporting properties*.
  • Use as a massage oil to calm emotions.
  • Take a warm bath with a few drops of Vetiver essential oil for deep relaxation.
  • Diffuse with Lavender, doTERRA Serenity®, or doTERRA Balance® to calm emotions and lessen stress.
  • Use a toothpick to help get the desired amount out of container if Vetiver is too thick to get out of the bottle. A little goes a long way.

Directions for Use

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.
Internal use: Dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. of liquid.
Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Cautions

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

Filled Up with Love

86819-spiritual-standing-at-sunrise-e1403280052670

Pausing.

Noticing.

The warmth of deepest love

spreads across my chest

filling beneath the collar bones

and hugging each shoulder.

I want to cling to this feeling

wrap it up tight in my arms

so it doesn’t float away.

Yet I know,

as feelings go,

it’s fleeting.

So I sit with the warmth

and it travels up into my eyes

causing tears to overflow

with gratitude.

For all of the people I am blessed to love.

For all of the experiences that led me here.

For my ancestors and Mother Earth’s loving kindness

I give thanks.

Then I open my arms wide

outstretched to embrace all I hold dear,

knowing I could never carry it all on my own.

Yet this simple gesture is enough.

There is enough love to go around

for both you and me.

I can give and receive freely, abundantly.

The love I give comes back to me

in a cycle, a relationship, a community.

And with this deep knowing,

I pause.

Notice.

Basking in the warmth of it all.

May you feel the deepest love flowing in and out of your being,

serenity

Serenity was one of the first oils I purchased from doTERRA almost five years ago. My five-year-old son was having some big emotions and outbursts and I needed help in keeping myself calm, as well as help calming him. My friend recommended Serenity to me and we used it on the bottoms of our feet and in a diffuser with immediate results. This oil is my go to when I am stressed out or have trouble falling asleep. It is in my diffuser almost every night at bedtime, as well as in my children’s diffusers. I apply a drop to my heart-space when I’m nervous or anxious about anything. This blend’s gentle oils help calm and soothe me and my family and I cannot recommend it enough.

Oil of the Week: Deep Blue

This is the third of many “Oil of the Week” posts, where I highlight the benefits, usage, and safety concerns associated with different essential oils. Personally, I use doTERRA Essential Oils for their purity, integrity, and generous business practices. I have had very profound, healing experiences with these oils and use them everyday for me and my family. deep-blue-5ml

Deep Blue, the Soothing Blend, is the oil I go to when I have any muscle discomfort. Yesterday, I foolishly drank two cups of coffee and then went on a run. No surprise that a mile in and my calf muscle locked up, causing me to limp home. (Note to self: caffeine causes dehydration…save it for after my run, along with a big glass of water!) Once home, I mixed two drops of Deep Blue oil with coconut oil and massaged it into my leg from my knee to ankle. A warming and cooling sensation gave me instant relief. I’ve also used Deep Blue for neck and shoulder tension after working on the computer too long, occasional lower back aches associated with menstrual cramps or heavy lifting, and my husband’s 92 year old grandmother has used it to support cartilage and joint function. (No need to be in your nineties to benefit from this soothing oil!) It comes in a variety of options, including an oil, roller bottle, a lotion, and a gel capsule to take internally. It is a strong oil, so most people benefit from diluting it before applying topically.

More from www.doterra.com:

Description

doTERRA Deep Blue is perfect for a soothing massage after a long day of work. Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus work together to soothe and cool. After long hours on the computer, try rubbing Deep Blue proprietary blend on your fingers, wrists, shoulders, and neck. A few drops of Deep Blue Soothing Blend diluted in Fractionated Coconut Oil can be part of a cooling and comforting massage.

Uses

  • Apply on feet and knees before and after exercise.
  • Massage Deep Blue with a few drops of carrier oil onto growing kids’ legs before bedtime.
  • Rub Deep Blue on lower back muscles after a day of heavy lifting at work or during a move.

Directions for Use

Topical use: Apply to desired area. Dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Cautions

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

doterra-balance-15ml.jpg

Balance, the Grounding Blend, is one of the first oils I ever experienced and it remains one of my top three favorite oils for emotional health. Almost five years ago, I got into essential oils to help my son and I manage the ups and downs of big emotions (aka tantrums by both him and me!) Balance, applied to the bottom of the feet, inside of the wrists, or behind the ears helped relieve our stress and feelings of anxiety…then and still now. I use Balance before I teach a class I’m nervous about or have a difficult conversation. Balance is applied to my heart when I’m anxious or stressed about a challenging relationship or when I want to be grounded and steady to support friends who are going through a hard time. If my mind is racing, Balance brings me back to earth and promotes calm and relaxation. For this “sometimes anxious” Mama, Balance is my go-to oil.

More from www.doterra.com:

Description

The warm, woody aroma of Balance, doTERRA’s grounding blend, creates a sense of calm and wellbeing. We perfectly blend Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile with Fractionated Coconut Oil to offer an enticing fragrance that promotes tranquility and relaxation. Spruce, one of the oils in Balance, was used by Native Americans for health and spiritual reasons and is still used today to bring harmony to the mind and body. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile can ease anxious feelings, while Frankincense provides a grounding, balancing effect on emotions.

Uses

  • Begin your day by putting Balance on the bottom of your feet to promote feelings of calmness and tranquility throughout the day.
  • Balance is a great oil blend to use during an AromaTouch® Hand Massage.
  • Apply doTERRA Balance to your wrists or neck to help ease anxious feelings.
  • Diffuse in your car during road trips to create a calming, soothing environment.

digest zen.jpg

The Oil of the Week this week is DigestZen, for personal reasons. (Aren’t digestion issues usually personal? It’s about to get real, folks.) Last weekend, my family and I went to Kansas City to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday. We attended a Kansas City Royals baseball game and a Kansas City Sporting soccer game, stayed out too late, and ate a lot of not-so-healthy food. We used DigestZen in the car to alleviate motion sickness from the drive (for both me and my sons) and throughout the weekend to reduce bloating associated with ballpark food (for me). My 10-year-old caught a stomach bug and our normal 2-hour drive home turned into 4-hours as we stopped with him vomiting every 30-minutes until we reached home. (Poor kid!) We applied DigestZen to his belly to ease feelings feelings of queasiness. Once home last week, the virus made a comeback a couple of days later in the form of 4-5 hours of diarrhea for both my boys. (TMI? This is mom talk, I know!) We diffused DigestZen in the diffuser next to them while they rested on the couch and applied a drop to the bottom of their feet. Although they caught the illness, DigestZen provided a healthy, natural, and gentle way to soothe their upset stomach.

Reflections on Miracles

I am making my way through Gabby Bernstein’s book May Cause Miracles and this past Saturday’s mantra was “Believe in Miracles”. Without sounding too ‘new-agey’, I am convinced miracles abound around us everyday waiting to be recognized.

After writing for a bit that morning, I pulled up my Facebook feed and my ‘Memories’ app showed me that five years ago I taught my first-ever yoga class for moms and babies. Wow! What an evolution these past five years has brought! Who knew that an hour spent five years ago with four mamas and sweet babies in the middle of a little children’s art studio would bring me so much joy and growth and so many new opportunities.

little yogi

Since then I have had the privilege to

  • teach up to six parent/child classes per week for little ones ages 0-3
  • offer Family Yoga for older kiddos
  • guide kids yoga camps
  • hold classes with different mom’s groups
  • take a 95-hour children’s yoga teacher training
  • complete a 200-hour RYT yoga training
  • teach a variety of adult yoga classes
  • offer yoga sessions for multi-age groups at church
  • help with children’s yoga teacher training each summer for a week
  • lead the toddler and family yoga portion of advanced children’s yoga teacher training
  • become our yoga studio director’s assistant.

I’ve had the honor of meeting hundreds of babies, toddlers, kids, moms, dads, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and ‘regular (spectacular) students’ in adult yoga classes, too.

This is a miracle! I list these things not to boast, but to highlight the fact that if you set out to follow your heart and share what you are passionate about, opportunities will present themselves to you if you are open to accepting them. It does take work…these classes and trainings took effort to prepare for, promote, and teach. I constantly study, reflect, and cultivate my own personal yoga practice so I can teach from my own knowing and experiences. However, the effort comes from an ‘allowing’ energy, rather than a ‘pushing’ energy. And gratitude is infused in all I do.

As I guided our Little Yogi toddler class this weekend, I realized my intention behind teaching yoga was being realized. I am intentionally cultivating a sacred space where all (children and adults) feel respected, valued, and loved. In this space, I want them to feel included in a like-hearted community, just as they are.

What a powerful offering…yes, to all students…but especially to those with children ages 0-3. Parenting at this age, often with self-judgement, societal pressures, sleepless nights, teething, tantrums, etc. is not for the faint of heart. This feeling of belonging that I set to create in my classes is a feeling I wish I had while I was parenting my little ones through this age.

It is what I’ve cultivated in mothering myself and my boys over the past 10 years. Respect. Value. Worth. Love. Just as you are. Just as I am. No matter how I am feeling, what I eat, what mistakes I make. I am enough. You are enough. And we can live in a place of sacred and fun, tenderness and humor, holy and joy. That is a miracle!

No matter if you teach yoga or not, you have the power to realize miracles in your own life. Notice what your heart calls you to do. Pay attention to what brings you joy and lights you up from the inside. Follow your bliss and be open to learning and growing along the way.

With so much gratitude to my yogi families and students, who teach me more than they will ever know~

Tenderness and Humor

30630_430454026893_3890844_n

Tenderness and Humor

May I go about my days immersed with these two healing balms.
Gentleness to hold me and those around me when kindness counts more than words.
A playful smile or silly joke when spirits need to dance above the mundane.

Tenderness and humor

to sweeten the deal and lighten the load.

to wrap arms around those I love and seal it with a kiss.

to find joy and sweetness in both celebration and sorrow.

to not take myself so seriously, but hold what matters when it counts.

to meet life

authentically

gently

lovingly

playfully.

Tenderness and humor.
Two companions to guide my days.

For the past week, I’ve immersed myself in Gabby Bernstein‘s work. In her books and talks, she helps people move past blocks caused by fear and reclaim their innate confidence, joyfulness, and vitality. I feel it working within me as I spend time looking at where my fear likes to manifest itself and acknowledging that 99% of the time my fears are just thoughts based on patterns or old beliefs that are no longer (or never were) true.

“Love did not create this” is what I’ve been telling myself when I notice fears creeping up to try to limit what I want to do or how I want to interact with the world. And by noticing the fears, feeling how it feels in my body, and then confirming that they are not my truth, I have discovered a sweet empowerment start to arise. I can say, “Oh you… you little fear thought! There you are again trying to sneak in. Nice try, but nope!” I can hold myself with tenderness and with a bit of humor to take away some of the power the thoughts have over me.

Upon realizing that treating myself with gentleness (non-judgement) sprinkled with a sense of humor dissipated the intensity of these false beliefs, I realized that this ‘Tenderness and Humor’ approach is also how I parent. I regard my children with warm understanding and plenty of giggles and funny faces. If they feel loved and heard first, there’s nothing like a good joke to shift the mood. Both for me as a parent and for them.

During this time of diving in to address my own fears, I’m using the same technique to parent myself. Tenderness and humor. Guiding myself gently with the corners of my mouth turned up just enough to let it all go and belly laugh when I’m ready.

Can you find the tenderness and humor in your life? What would happen if you looked at your family or yourself with soft eyes and a playful smile? Practice in a mirror…I promise it will have significant results.

Most heart-joyfully yours,

Santosha
